Street Pastors is a national organisation that was started in London in 2003. It is a unified church response to urban problems, engaging with people on the streets.
A Street Pastor is a volunteer from the Christian community who is willing to participate with people where they are, in terms of their thinking (their perspective of life) and location (where they hang out – be it on the streets, in the pubs and clubs or at parties). The role is not one about preaching heaven and hell, but one of caring, listening and helping.
Christ Church Central has teamed up with other local churches to provide assistance with the city centre Street Pastors group. Typically this means each individual (as part of a larger team of four) go out once a month at the weekend from the hours of 10:00p.m. to 4:00a.m. Great dialogue is held with party goers and local door staff, together with practical help when needed. Part of the objective is to gain the credibility of the community, so the community know that the church has come to them.
